Receiving the Vice Presidential Service Academy Nomination is an Honor!

Receiving a nomination from any Service Academy nominating authority is an honor, but the Vice Presidential nomination is extremely competitive. Being selected to receive the VP’s nomination is quite the accomplishment!

Normally there are 1-2 vacancies for each Service Academy every year. Meaning there are 1-2 spots available for the VP’s nomination at each school, out of 5 total spots at each school.

Since the VP typically receives thousands of applications each year for each Academy, the routine for ranking candidates works a little differently. The VP leaves it to each Academy to evaluate and rank the applications. Although you receive the nomination from the Vice President if chosen, the admissions team of the Service Academy you are applying to is the decision-maker!

If any additional information is requested from the candidate, that information flows through the Academy instead of directly to the Vice President and their team. Even if you don’t think you are competitive, apply! If you are eligible, the more nominating authorities you apply for the better.

What Makes Students Competitive for the Vice Presidential Service Academy Nomination?

  • Excellent SAT/ACT scores
  • Top of your High School class
  • High involvement in extracurricular activities and leadership roles
  • Active within athletics – captain and/or received varsity letters

These will vary between different Service Academies as each admissions team will have different criteria and top applicants.

The Vice President Only Nominates for 3 Service Academies

The Vice President nominates candidates for The Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, and West Point. The VP does not nominate for Coast Guard Academy or Merchant Marine Academy.

The Vice President Can Nominate You Regardless of Your Location

The Vice President is the only nominating authority that can nominate candidates without geographical restriction. Include the Vice President in your quest to receive a Congressional nomination, along with your Senator and State Representative.
